The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department requires the use of approved compostable bags for weekly yard waste collection of grass trimming and leaves. The compostable bags enable the City to divert the valuable organic material away from the landfill and into a composting operation. Composting reduces the amount of waste landfilled, reduces green house gas emissions and produces valuable organic matter and nutrients for gardens, landscapes and yards. Residents help the City divert between 10,000 and 15,000 tons of yard waste each year. To participate in the yard waste collection program place your grass clippings and leaves in a City approved compostable bag on your curb on your regular garbage day. The City utilizes compostable bags that are translucent to ensure the material collected is clean yard waste and not regular trash.
Acceptable Bags Only the following bag brands are acceptable to put in your food and yard waste bin. These logos also identify compostable bags accepted in Seattle's food and yard waste bins. Buy these bags at most retail stores or online.Most compostable bags won't break down into compost in backyard compost or in your collection bins.

Zero-Sort recycling is a state-of-the-art process that enables paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and metal cans to be collected together in one bin, eliminating the need for you to separate recyclables. Remember that plastic bags are not allowed in your recycling! If you need more space for your recyclables, you may use any type of durable, weather-proof container as an additional recycling bin.

Set recyclables and trash at the curb between 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on your scheduled trash/recycling day. Whenever a scheduled collection day falls on a holiday, that day's collection and all remaining collections for the week will be delayed one day.
You can put your EMPTY pizza box in the recycling bin. Grease is okay. This includes pizza boxes (with the exception of frozen pizza boxes) made out of cardboard or box board (think cereal box) as long as they are empty. Helpful suggestion: fold the box inside-out before you put it in the recycling. This will make sure that the box is completely empty so there are no surprises at the sorting facility.
Our zero-sort recycling system allows residents to put all eligible items - plastic bottles, newspaper, glass containers, etc. - in the same bins. Materials are sorted by large machines back at the recycling plant.
Plastic bags are particularly problematic for the sorting machines at the recycling facility. Plastic bags get tangled in the machinery and can also be hazardous for workers to extract from the machines.
Recycling that includes contaminated material will not be collected at the curb as of Oct. 1, 2022. In addition, recycling left in a plastic bag at the curb will not be collected - recycling must be placed in City provided green bins or a plastic bin of your own.

There are easy and cost-effective ways to reduce waste and recapture the benefits of plastic bags and wrap after their initial use. Individuals and businesses can reduce excessive use of bags and wrap, reuse them or recycle them. Industrial shrink wrap used in the packaging can be recycled and is in high demand by manufacturers as a raw material. Individuals, schools, non-profits, workplaces and communities can collect plastic bags and wrap for recycling or promote local recycling programs. One opportunity for involvement is through WRAP, the Wrap Recycling Action Project.
Many grocery stores offer durable, washable bags to customers at an affordable price. Using these bags on a regular basis can create less waste than paper or plastic, and washing them regularly removes dirt and germs.

Non-recyclable plastic wraps include any wrap or bag that contained frozen food, pre-washed salad mix bags and bags labeled as degradable. Any plastic wrap, bag or film that is dirty or wet should also not be recycled.
Although some community recycling programs accept plastic bags and wrap in the curbside collection, the industry strongly encourages consumers to use drop-off locations instead. Plastic wrap, bags and film clog curbside recycling machinery and are difficult to separate from other materials. For now, the best option is to take clean, empty bags and wrap to a retailer or other drop-off site that offers a plastic film recycling bin.
The DNR partnered with the American Chemistry Council's Flexible Film Recycling Group and GreenBlue's Sustainable Packaging Coalition on a plastic film recycling initiative called Wisconsin WRAP: Recycling Plastic Film Beyond Bags.
This public/private partnership focuses on increasing the recycling of plastic film found in nearly every business and household to increase the recycling rate significantly. A 2012 DNR plastics recycling study concluded that Wisconsin could realize substantial economic benefits by recycling more of the valuable plastic film that currently ends up in landfills.
After assessing the existing infrastructure and state of recycling, the partners developed plans to address key barriers: access to recycling for businesses and lack of consumer information. In addition to a consumer education campaign launched in October 2013 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin WRAP is also implementing commercial demonstration projects and going statewide with consumer bag and wrap recycling awareness campaigns in various regions of the state.
