the story starts when a new sheriff arrived in the town of carmody. he was not like the other councilmen who promised good jobs and high paychecks and soon had the town's good graces, but the one who got nothing but e-mails for his troubles. as he continued to look around the town he found a still functioning windmill that no one else seemed to notice. on a whim, he decided to hop in and see if its old doors would open up for him. he didn't remember seeing any keys on the top and assumed everyone must have a key. as he stepped up to the doors, all the gears began to turn and once they were turned they would not turn back. he could not move the gears that turned them. the more he tried to turn the gears, the more the game progressed. he found a boarded up door with a sign that said play safe and looked inside to see what the place was. the place was a jail and inside was a man. it was the last known person to have been imprisoned here and was a good place to start trying to figure out how the place was run. the player moves between scenes by choosing between the four gears which represent the four different scenes. selecting a gear takes the player into that scene as he must continue to ask questions to progress. the final gear shows a character list which will let the player see the name of all the people in the jail.

after a while the sheriff had no more questions to ask and started to get bored. he put on the oven mitts and pulled the lever that released the man from his cell. as he began to unchain the man he heard a thump and then a curse. the sheriff almost fainted from the smell and broke out in a sweat. he had to wipe it off of his face as he was about to collapse. he then turned around to look at the man as he slowly stood up. as the man began to move toward the door, he could tell his legs were weak but soon enough he had recovered enough to walk. he was a prison worker and knew all the guards names, his job was to go around at night and free the prisoners. the man explained to the sheriff that night was the only time that he could travel throughout the jail to release prisoners since the guards would be off at the day time. the man then asked how he had gotten in? the sheriff did not even have a chance to answer him before he was the man's captive. he then had to distract the guards who were sleeping inside the cell while the two of them ran out the door. he ran to the door and soon enough it opened and they were free. the two of them sprinted to the edge of the town and came to an old windmill. the sheriff let out a sigh as he could not believe that he had been missing a very important person. he had always been a good sheriff, but now he was great! he had everything that he needed in life and no one knew it but him. he then made his way back to the town so that he could tell everyone else what he had done and they would make him mayor.
