How to Enjoy Neighbours From Hell 5 with the Fan-Made English Patch

140. Technology can be used to serve all the aims of present-day civilization. But its use must be subject to a number of necessary and decisive principles. The principles which need to be applied to technological research are fairly well known. They include the use of available resources in a way that serves human welfare and the limits of humanity; respect for human dignity, for spiritual and moral values and for the good of the environment; and respect for the principle of informed consent, in particular the responsible production and distribution of knowledge which guarantees that the goods produced are not abused. These are clear guidelines for the responsible use of scientific and technological means. They stem from the first principles of the Christian faith and are evident in the teaching and example of Christ. [81] The spirit of the Christian message directs us to give priority to the good of all. The earth is entrusted to us and to humanity, and not to ourselves alone. Since we live in the world, we have a responsibility towards those who are near and dear to us: the more distant and unknown, the less we should concern ourselves with. Science and technology can be used for good, for the benefit of all. But they must never be placed above and beyond human beings, who have been created in the image of God.

142. The present-day urgency of the question of ecological degradation poses a challenge to individuals, to governments, to the entire international community, which are called to find more effective ways of working together in pursuit of common objectives. At the same time, the new technologies are revealing a situation in which we are linked to the entire biosphere. A number of thinkers have described this interdependence as an anthropocentric condition which has become unsustainable. If we are not to find ourselves in a predicament from which we will never be able to escape, we must urgently begin to examine the meaning of this new, cosmopolitian condition. [73] We shall then be able to ask what we owe to the rest of the planet and the cosmos in our practices and activities, and what we owe to ourselves. What should be understood as due to all of us is never just the goods which the Earth provides us for our own physical and spiritual comfort. We are called to rediscover the meaning and dignity of human life in all its richness. [72] By nurturing certain human values, such as the common good, or by setting aside certain privileges, we can strengthen the human spirit and help to renew the ties that connect us to the whole creation. As a consequence, every human act of individual or community responsibility contributes to the work of building a more integral and sustainable form of human society.
