Buy Port Online

Blended from the most important red grapes of the Douro Valley, Port is based on Touriga Nacional with over 80 other varieties approved for use. However, typically only four other varieties play a major role: Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) and Touriga Franca. Other wine regions of the world can produce fortified port wine of a similar style from the same grapes or other grapes.

Port is one of the great classic European Wines and its history is a long and fascinating one. Port is a Fortified Wine which involves adding a proportion of grape spirit, or Brandy, to the Wine at some point during the production process. Port is arguably the greatest of all Fortified Wines and its paramount expression, Vintage Port, ranks alongside the finest produce of Bordeaux or Burgundy as one of the great iconic Wines of the world. We offer a range of Vintage Port, Colheita Port, LBV, White & Tawny Port.

The Duoro region is where Port is traditionally made. It is created by adding a distilled grape spirit to the wine base; the spirit stops the fermentation process in its tracks and is what fortifies the wine and gives it its distinctive sweet taste. No one grape is used to create Port, in fact there are many types winemakers can choose from including Tempranillo and Tinta Barroca. These are used to make the base for red port, whereas grapes such as Rabigato and Gouveio are used for its white counterparts.

This type of wine comes in a number of different varieties. Ruby port is the least expensive, most exported and often stored in steel containers. The best vintage rubies are aged in wooden barrels for a number of years.

Vintage ports are aged in barrels for one to two years which is then continued in the bottle for up to another 40 years. Of all Ports they are the darkest, having a deep ruby hue. The flavours can intensify for years after being bottled, so good things do come to those who wait.

Otherwise known as Upper Duoro, this is located to the east and in fact reaches all the way to the Spanish border, is hotter and drier than the other subregions and all types of port are produced there.

The Ferreira Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port is a high quality Porto Wine, which combines the unique characteristics of the year in which it was produced with the comfort of being able to enjoy it immediately or after some ageing in the bottle. LBV Ports are single harvest wines, bottled 4 to 6 years after the vintage. A profound, almost opaque, violet colour the Ferreira LBV has an intense and complex aroma with fresh shrubby notes, spicy hints of black pepper and ginger, black fruits and a touch of cocoa courtesy of a good maturation. On the palate, this port wine has excellent volume, firm tannins of great quality, a well-integrated acidity, notes of black fruit and resinous wood. It has a long and complex finish.

We endeavour to display accurate and current vintages on all our wines listed on the website; however, from time to time stocks of the vintage listed do become exhausted. If this is the case with your order we will always contact you to recommend another vintage of the same wine, if it is still available. If the vintage of a wine is important to you then please leave a note at checkout advising us of this.
